Summer lockdown initiative

We have been thinking about how Let June Make A Difference can support children and young people across North Kirklees with the challenges they face as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting lockdown.

It seemed to us that one of the biggest issues facing many families was how to keep children entertained during this extended period of confinement. For many, buying new toys, jigsaws, colouring books etc was financially not possible. We therefore asked Junior Schools to nominate financially stretched families who they believed would benefit from some small items which, under “normal” circumstances, would not be eligible for our support. Schools had a free hand in the number of families they could choose and the specific items they wanted up to a total of £150 per school.

We have made 22 awards under the Lockdown Initiative at an average value of £143. We estimate that the initiative will have reached approximately 100 families in North Kirklees. Items requested differed greatly from school to school but books, colouring sets and outdoor sports equipment proved to be very popular!
